Ocado

Ocado has been built to change shopping habits of a lifetime.

E-retailer Ocado is available to 6.2 million households across the South East and Midlands, with plans to continue expanding throughout the year. It is now the market leader in London and the M25 and delivers 20,000 orders of top-quality Waitrose groceries per week from its purpose-built facility in Hatfield.

By fulfilling orders from a world-class, central customer fulfilment centre, live inventory is shown on its web shop, enabling customers to choose from a range of groceries that are actually in stock. Using unique logistics software and satellite navigation systems in the vans, customers are sure to receive the right goods at the right time.

The Ocado fleet has been specially designed by Mercedes based on their Sprinter model, to tight specifications by Ocado. The back section of each van, where the groceries are carried, is called a Pod. Each Pod has separate compartments to carry chilled, frozen and ambient food so shopping arrives at exactly the right temperature and is always fresh.

Everything about the operation echoes this quality approach. And so, too, the company’s payroll solution.

esl provides Ocado with a fully managed payroll service. Data for new starters and changes to employee data is submitted electronically direct from Ocado’s human resources system, thus ensuring accuracy and efficiency. For variable payroll data such as hours worked, Ocado’s state-of-the-art time and attendance system allows information to be captured by hand readers, which eliminate the need to produce and control ID cards.

“With a significant weekly and monthly payroll which is growing consistently in line with our business plan, it is essential for us to harness today’s technology to maximise our efficiency and ensure that our needs are fully met”, comments Ocado’s Head of Finance. “The team at esl provides us with professional support and our regular review meetings with them enable us to keep on track as Ocado evolves”.
