An interesting development has been announced by the Government with plans to replace GP sick notes with 'fit notes', which will switch the focus to what people can do rather than what they cannot. At esl we are preparing for such a system being rolled out and enabling employers to control this electronically.
The Government wants the new notes to be produced in electronic format and electronic notes are being tested in Wales and the results of the pilot will determine the speed of any wider move away from paper-based reporting. Alan Johnson, Secretary of State for Health has announced that the aim is to introduce the new system in the second half of 2009.
